Meet Alistair Bethke, founder

Consolidated Horticultural Services was founded in 1995 by Alistair Bethke, after he had spent seven years working for the City of Melbourne’s Parks and Gardens division. With his broad experience and hands on approach, Alistair has developed a reputation for maintaining premium gardens across Melbourne’s inner suburbs, many of which have been captured in Paul Bangay’s books.


At CHS, our standard-driven service places a high value on horticultural excellence, as well as the development of positive relationships with clients as we help their gardens grow and develop over time.

Around 2,000 people turned out for the NGVWA Garden Day on 22 October, where private gardens across Toorak and Armadale opened for one day only. ? Our team was part of the preparation. The lawns were prepared over several months to be at their best on the day. In the lead-up, the beds were composted, bamboo was cleared from the gully, fresh stones went in and the gully was replanted with extra palms. Fresh bedding plants finished things off around the lawns and along the driveway edges. Thanks to @ngvwa_vic for having us involved. A mature tree pulls a lot of water and nutrients out of the soil, so the planting underneath is competing all year round.
